Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministry is a distinctively Christian form of lay care provided by congregation members trained to provide one-to-one support for persons in a variety of stress producing circumstances. Becoming a Stephen Minister involves a two-year commitment that includes 50 hours of initial training plus continuing education and supervision while serving. Training of Stephen Ministers and oversight of the program is provided by a Stephen Leadership Team.
Stephen Ministry began at Healdsburg Community Church in 2001 when the first group of Stephen Ministers was commissioned. This group includes Michael Lemereis, Mary Murphy, Lew and Elaine Sbrana, and Mary Sue Trosper. The second group of Stephen Ministers was commissioned in May of 2006. This group was trained by Sally and Ed Lobb, and Becca Jordan-Irwin, assisted by Michael Lemereis, and includes Christine Bethards, Archie Julian, Carla Kagel, Richard Kagel, Nancy Napolitan, Wanda Scalione, and Pat Swan. Stephen Ministers from both groups provided over 500 hours of one-to-one Christian caring support for those in crisis, as assigned by the Stephen Leaders. The entire group meets together twice monthly for continuing education and small group supervision.
In January of 2007, Richard and Carla Kagel completed a 40-hour intensive training course and were commissioned as Stephen Leaders, joining the Stephen Leader Team of Sally and Ed Lobb and Becca Jordan-Irwin. The Stephen Leader team communicates frequently and meets as needed to review the activities of the Stephen Ministry program, to plan for the future of the program and resolve any questions that arise.
The Christ-centered training of the Stephen Ministry program can have a transforming effect on the individual Stephen Ministers, enhancing their faith and their skill in providing Christ’s healing care to hurting individuals within the congregation, in the larger community, and in the circle of family and friends close to each Stephen Minister. Such work is part of the way that Healdsburg Community Church brings the kingdom of God closer to each of us.
